About Us

What is Scouting?

The Scout Association is the largest co-educational youth movement in the UK. Scouting provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for over 400,000 young people.Scouting gives young people the opportunity to learn by doing, as part of a balanced programme. Our programme is a continuous progression of training, activities and awards that covers everything young people do in Scouting

Internationally, there are over 28 million Members of the Scout Movement, across 216 countries and territories. 2/3 of international membership is in developing countries. Around the world, Scouts are involved in projects including peace education, provision of clean water and sanitation and environmental conservation.

Developing young people

Scouting is open to all young people aged from 6 to 25, regardless of gender, faith, ability or background. Scouting aims to help all young people reach their full potential. This means assisting the development of young people as active members of the community who are self-reliant, caring, responsible and committed.

Don’t Scouts just tie knots?

In Scouting, we believe that young people develop most when they are ‘learning by doing’, when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

Development is guided by the Balanced Programme – a continuous progression of training, activities, badges and awards for all young people. Adventure is at the core of Scouting. Through adventure we challenge individuals so that they learn and experience new things
that will enrich their lives.

The Programme is designed to help young people learn about their community and the wider world, improve their fitness and health and develop their creative talents. It encourages them to enjoy adventure in the outdoors and develop their beliefs and attitudes against the backdrop of the Scout Law and Promise.

Our Group

The 5th Darlington Scout Group was formed in 1912 has and has been offering young people from Darlington the fun, challenge and adventure of Scouting for over 100 years.

Our Group currently has 3 sections:

  • Beavers – 6-8 year old
  • Cubs – 8-10.5 year old
  • Scouts – 10.5-14 year old

The group offers everyone a wide range of activities that form the balanced programme. These include arts and crafts, learning about other faiths and cultures, traditional scouting skills like pioneering, cooking and being in the great outdoors. Most importantly everybody has fun, makes new friends and gains a lifetime of memories.
